Breaking the Mold: Gundam Breaker 4 Review From a Switch Lite Perspective

When I preordered Gundam Breaker 4, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Preorders, especially for niche franchises, can always be a gamble. Would this latest installment in the Gundam Breaker series be a welcomed successor or crumble under the weight of expectations? Over the years, I’ve learned the approach to preorder deals—complete with their collector’s editions and exclusive perks—with cautious optimism. Yet this time, I disregarded all aforementioned wisdom, eager to dive into what promised to be an exciting addition to the franchise.

Gundam Breaker 4 builds on a legacy that started in 2013, succeeding New Gundam Breaker (2018) and drawing from animated spin-offs like Gundam Breaker Battlogue. Each entry in the series has faced its share of criticism, from clunky mechanics to incomplete gameplay loops, but also earned praise for delivering on the fantasy of building and battling custom gunpla. Does GB4 succeed where its predecessors faltered? I’d say yes—with some caveats.

Risk vs. Reward: The Preorder Gamble

I opted for the Nintendo Switch Collector’s Edition, lured by the promise of an exclusive Gunbarrel Strike Gundam model kit and a few other extras. Despite playing on a Switch Lite, I was impressed with how the game ran. Sure, the handheld display meant a smaller screen and less graphical fidelity compared to other platforms, but the developers worked wonders in optimizing performance. Frame drops were minimal, and the game maintained a crisp visual style that showcased the intricate gunpla designs. I would even argue that the platform fits the almost arcade game approach to gunpla builds and battles.

Still, GB4 isn’t without its flaws. Minor bugs occasionally cropped up, and the Switch Lite’s hardware limitations sometimes felt noticeable. But the developers seem committed to addressing these issues, ensuring a smoother experience with updates.

Gameplay and Replayability: A Winning Formula

The storyline in Gundam Breaker 4 is a love letter to fans, weaving together elements from prior titles, the Gunpla Warfare mobile game, and even the Battlogue anime. The new game modes offer engaging challenges, while the difficulty levels keep both casual players and seasoned veterans entertained. Post-game content and a robust customization system give GB4 an impressive replay value.

Customization is where GB4 shines brightest. With an expansive library of parts—each with its own levels, grades, and rarity—players can build gunpla that suit their unique playstyles. Layered mechanics like buffs, debuffs, and augmentations add a level of strategy that deepens the gameplay. Grinding for parts and upgrades might feel tedious at times, but it’s balanced by the satisfaction of creating the perfect build.

Playing on Switch Lite: Strengths and Limitations

As a Switch Lite player, the game’s portability is a huge draw. There’s something magical about being able to immerse yourself in gunpla battles anywhere, whether lounging at home or on the go. However, the Lite’s smaller screen and limited processing power mean that some features don’t shine as brightly as they would on a PC or console.

Even so, GB4 feels at home on the Switch. Its arcade-style gameplay and accessible controls make it an excellent fit for a handheld console, even if it occasionally pushes the hardware to its limits.

Final Thoughts: A Worthy Successor

Gundam Breaker 4 has earned its place as my favorite Gundam game so far. It captures the essence of the franchise while introducing welcome improvements that make it more engaging than its predecessors. The campaign is rich with content, the customization options are vast, and the gameplay strikes a perfect balance between depth and fun. Add-ons like the collector’s edition Gunpla kit sweeten the deal, especially for dedicated fans and gunpla builders.

While the game has room for improvement, particularly in performance on lower-spec systems like the Switch Lite, it delivers an experience that both casual players and hardcore gunpla enthusiasts can appreciate. Whether you’re new to the series or a longtime fan, Gundam Breaker 4 is worth the investment—and for me, it made the preorder gamble pay off.
